The Head of State His Excellency Paul BIYA took active part in the special meeting on Wednesday 2nd April 2014 in Brussels on the situation of the Central African Republic. He equally spoke at the session on “Peace and Security” that took place on the first day of the EU – Africa summit.
The special meeting on the Central African Republic was an occasion for the various delegations to give their support to the authorities of the transition government of this country which is working for peace, security and dialogue.
In his remarks, President Paul BIYA declared the urgent need to take quick and correct decisions, because we have to act in the face of the violence that is still going on. He pointed out that efforts so far to stabilise this country are still insufficient.
President Paul BIYA said that it was time for action, because it was imperative to stop the war going on in the Central African Republic, because the stability of neighbouring countries, the entire sub-region and the peace of Africa were at stake.
The Central African Republic is facing a lot of complex problems which need the support of the entire international community. The crisis in that country has dramatic consequences on the civilian population and the regional impact is very pre-occupying. The neighbouring countries have been heavily affected by the massive influx of refugees from there.
In this wise, President Paul BIYA was pleased to note the recent discussions in the UN Security Council geared towards transforming the MISCA into a peace keeping mission, with more troops and better means at their disposal. He recalled that Cameroon has been calling for such a transformation since January 2014.
During the discussions on “Peace and Security” which was the first session of the 4th Eu – Africa summit, President Paul BIYA once more took the floor to talk on the situation in the Central African Republic, which is degrading rapidly and causing a security and humanitarian disaster. He therefore called for the putting in place of a peacekeeping mission under the auspices of the United Nations.
