The Secretary General of the United Nations Ban KI-MOON has expressed his satisfaction with the Summit of Heads of State of the ECCAS, the ECOWAS and the GGC that held in Yaoundé from 24 to 25 June 2013 on maritime safety and security in the Gulf of Guinea. The United Nations Scribe saluted their firm commitments and their efforts to eradicate this problem, which has been very devastating on the economies of countries in the region.
The Secretary General is happy with the adoption of a code of conduct which will go a long way in the fight against insecurity and illicit activities in the region and lays out a regional strategy for the fight against piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea. He calls on all the member States of the region to sign it and to put it into practice, and encourages bilateral and regional partners to join in this effort.
The United Nations pledged to continue to provide support and guidance especially through the regional representatives of the Secretary General in Central and West Africa.
