The Head of State His Excellency Paul BIYA presided over celebrations marking the 50th Anniversary of the Reunification of Cameroon in Buea on Thursday 20 February 2014. The very magnificent and colourful military and civilian march past was a befitting celebration of the courage and patriotic zeal that led our leaders to seek to reunite the country. President Paul BIYA paid homage to all our national heroes and called on all Cameroonians to work tirelessly to consolidate their achievement.

In his welcome speech at the beginning of the occasion, the Mayor of Buea Mr. Patrick ESUNGE EKEMA Council thanked the President of the Republic for the numerous projects that have transformed Buea into a modern city. He regretted the fact that Buea is the only Regional headquarters with the status of a Subdivision.

President Paul BIYA thanked the population of the South West Region and those of all the other regions who came to participate in the celebrations. The Head of State equally thanked the friendly countries and international organisations, especially the United Nations Organisation, which contributed a lot to the independence and reunification of Cameroon, and have supported us in our development efforts. The President equally lauded the efforts we have made in the domains of education, health, infrastructure and national unity. The construction of a modern democratic state with solid republican institutions has not been easy, but we have forged ahead and made significant progress.

The Presidential Couple was offered gifts from traditional rulers of the North West and South West Regions. A reception was offered to over two thousand invitees later in the evening during which people had the chance to chat over a drink.
