Cameroon's First Lady Chantal BIYA has attended a concert for the spouses of Heads of State hosted by Michelle OBAMA, First Lady of the United States of America.
The event was dedicated to the “Let Girls Learn” initiative; for the education of adolescent girls in the world. It was organised on Monday 19 September 2016, on the sidelines of the 71st UN General Assembly in New York.
The “Let Girls Learn” initiative was implemented by Michelle OBAMA’s engagement to the principle that: “the education of a girl is the creation of a strong family, a stronger community and a better future for the society.” Countries where majority of the girls have attained secondary education have witnessed the lowest levels of maternal and infant mortality, the lowest prevalence of HIV/AIDS, and malnutrition.
Thus the initiative’s goal is to provide good education to young girls because 62 million girls worldwide are still suffering from under-enrolment.
Addressing the First Ladies gathered at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre in New York, Michelle OBAMA persuaded her counterparts to mobilise maximum financial and human resources to better educate young girls.
Testimonies and musical interludes were part of the 90-minute event. Nationals from Malawi, Palestine and Jordan shared their experiences of under-education.
Amongst the guests present were the First Ladies of Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, Malawi and other spouses of Heads of State and Government attending the 71st General Assembly of the United Nations.
